Literature Text

What scene would I rather be enveloped in
than this one
an ordinary
day at work
as the worms continue along their paths and
the birds remain in flight?

I see the leaves fall
through the sky as the clouds rumble
and tumble, not in a threatening
manner, simply to remind me
that they are there.

It gives me time to think
about
my lunch and how
unlike the bird or the worm
I did not fend others off for my sandwich or
for my bag of barbecue-flavored
chips, I bought them. The only
questing that took place was withing my mind: Turkey
or Tuna? the chips I grabbed
as a last minute thought, did not take
hours to discover, only a short
drive to the corner market.

Outside of this room
there is
a world of unimaginable
size and inspiration.  A place
where animals must forage and fight for their
place in life.  but I am not part
of it.  I am part of the corner store
foragers.  In a world of infinite size
I do not test the waters.  I eat
my sandwich and my chips and try
my best not to disturb the waters
of our indescribable world.
Part of an optional poetry writing assignment for my English class. The criteria was to take a few lines (the words Italicized) from the Billy Collins poem "I Ask You," then build off of it, and create your own poem. This was my result.
